The birth of Isle of Skye Sea Salt
Our story
The company was the first in the UK to develop and implement this process. Founded in 2011, the Isle of Skye Sea Salt Company was created with the aim of creating a sustainable and environmentally friendly business using only the natural elements to evaporate the seawater, the same method that is used to produce sea salt in parts of southwest Europe. After 3 years of research and experimentation to perfect the process, the sea salt was ready for the market. In 2023, a young French couple, Elisa and Antoine, took over the company, driven by their love of Skye, Scotland and good food. They are committed to sustainability and keeping this heritage alive. Today, the company is developing new flavours, always respecting its values and drawing all its inspiration from Skye and Scotland.Over the years, our sea salts have won numerous awards, including Great Taste awards, and is used by artisans and chefs throughout Scotland for its distinct taste and unique location.

It’s our Ethos.
The Isle of Skye Sea Salt Company was set up with the aim of producing a top quality, gourmet celtic sea salt, with minimum impact on the beautiful environment of the Isle of Skye. We have developed a unique solar evaporation process that harnesses the sun and the wind to evaporate the water that sits in ponds within polytunnels beside Loch Snizort.
This very natural process and the provenance of our location on Skye has allowed us to produce a premium quality sea salt with a distinct taste and texture. When we started the business, we were the only sea salt producers in the UK to make the salt using this process and within two years of production, we began winning awards with the most recent being in 2024. These awards are an endorsement of the years of research and hard work undertaken to achieve our ambition and we are proud to be regarded as pioneers of the revival of the historic Scottish Sea Salt industry.
Harnessing the power of the sun and wind to make sea salt is a slow natural process, but one that has earned international recognition. We were very pleased to be one of the few Scottish food producers to be nominated to receive the accolade of being entered into theInternational Slow Food Movement 'Ark of Taste', which recognises producerswho seek to resurrect and reimagine traditional local foods.
